I wanted to give you some idea of what each area has to offer you so you can decide for yourself where you would want to start or end your night while in Singapore. One thing to keep in mind is that public transportation is all over Singapore so getting around is easy to do even without a car. So have fun but always be safe.
IMPORTANT NOTE ON CLUB LISTS:
1) I am always updating the information when I find new clubs or a new hot spot in Singapore to party, so when I find name changes or clubs that have close down I make the needed changes on the club list.
2) Many of the bigger clubs can be found on the links page or by the links in the address so you can check out their web sites.
3) Due to the total number of night places in the country there is no way I can list them all. I have listed the most well known places or places that are in the same general area.
If you wish to add your favorite club or a place I missed please add the information so everyone will know about it, you can do this thought the comment boxes location on the pages. If you should find that a place that is closed or changed names please submit the new information and I will make the changes to keep the list up to date.
Boat Quay / Circular Road / Fullerton
The Boat Quay area is located next to Chinatown and the Central Business District or CBD and runs along the Singapore River which gives all the clubs a good view to be enjoyed. Being a big tourist location within the area you will find many different restaurants from various other countries to test your taste buds on. Mixed in there are also many pubs and clubs to enter your ranging from Hip-Hop, Jazz, Techno, Hindi, Belly dancing and Karaoke clubs to quiet places to chat with friends so this area offers something for everyone.
Most of the clubs and restaurants in the area open after 4 or 5pm while the larger places will open for lunch so trips there in the day time limit what you will find open but at night the Boat Quay area is alive with the smells of great food and the sounds of music the different clubs until 3 in the morning. You can find Expat’s at some of the more expensive clubs in the area such as Harry’s, Penny Black and the BQ Bar that chatter to their needs in the ways of clubbing.
One think to keep in my about both Boat Quay and Circular Road is that there are really good night spots located on the second or third floors of the shop-houses so if you do not see anything you like on the grown level venture to stairs and I’m sure you will pleasantly surprised but what you find.
On the back side of Boat Quay you will find Circular Road which also as a large number of small pubs, 41 last counted, and several restaurants, Circular Road is differently an area worth visiting. Many of pubs on this street are a bit smaller and the action is good after 11 pm when things really get heated up and get busy. There are new clubs on the street since the remodeling was finished back in 2004 on the old shop-houses, so if you haven’t been there in a while check it out for yourselves, you’ll be happy you did.
Circular Road has a younger crowd over all but everyone is welcome to party.
Clarke Quay & Riverside Point
Location; up the Singapore River from Boat Quay off River Valley Road & Clemenceau Ave, much like Boat Quay only set up more for the tourist and older crowd with a many new clubs and disco’s for the younger people. Many fine dinning eating restaurants are located here as well as shops and a hawker center if you should find yourself short of cash and need a bit to eat. Spread out over several streets there is a Center Square (court yard) linking it all the streets together but you can get a bit confused as to which way to go next when trying to find a certain location.
Shopping in the Clarke Quay area will give you the opportunity to view craft works from all over Asia and a great location to brows though the shops looking for the special gift to take back home. If you are unable to find what you are looking for there is Lian Court Shopping Center right next door. This is also one of the few and best places in the area to find ATM machines if you are in need of some pocket cash.
Hot spots in the area include Hooters, Crazy Elephant club, Bar Cocoon - Forbidden City, Attica, The Clinic, Lunar, China One, Gotham Penthouse and the Arena.
There are also smaller pubs like Asylum and Budgie Bar which gives you a place to just chill out in.
All of Clarke Quay has been remodeled so if you haven’t been there for a while return and have fun at all the new clubs.
UE Square / Robertson Quay / Center Mall / Mohamed Sultan Road
You want to do some serious partying? This is another big player, lots and lots of clubs and always packed with people everywhere
Over at UE Square, Roberson Quay and Central Mall the party goes on still, many of regular club goers visit the area for the good times.
Central Mall Location; Magazine Road & Havelock Road, This area can of unknown by those visiting Singapore because it is hidden away from plan view but once you find it Central Mall is a party area that has around 10 clubs for your enjoyment all with in the confines of the mall area.
Orchard Road
Being a tourist street you have bars, pubs, disco’s, beer gardens, all over the street the trick is to find them because many are located in the shopping malls that cover the entire length of the street which is about 1500 meters long. So you will have to enter the mall to see which clubs it has. Some clubs are tucked away in side streets or behind other locations making them even harder to find. So you may spend time looking for a place if it is your first time going. The hotels along the street all have bars and clubs in them so don’t forget to check those out as well. Upper Orchard Road is best known as the location of the world famous Orchard Towers, Hard Rock Café and Brix on Scotts Road to mention a few places.
Lower Orchard Road is known for No.5 & Ice Cold Beer (ICB) on Emerald Hill Road, Rough, and the Alley Bar.
Club Street / Gemmil Lane / Ann Saing Road / Keong Saik Rd /(CBD)
Located off Cross Street in the CBD, this short street is full of clubs and restaurants a long its walk way. Being in an area visited by Expats since many live in the area you will fine shop house size clubs to visit from places to shot pool or have a gourmet French dinner. A nice place to go and get away from the normal trendy crowds that hit the other areas in the city and you can sit outside of one of the clubs and have a glass of wine while enjoying the evening with relatively peace and quiet. Like other areas you will need to stick your head in to the different places to see what is offered since in many cases you can not tell from the outside.
Joo Chiat / Geylang
Since 2002 this area has really started to come a live with action in the pubs. First Joo Chiat was the main street to party on but the people in the area started to complain so some of the places closes or moved over to Geylang Road. This is one area where you don’t see a many if any tourist or even expact, more of a local’s area mainly due to the fact that many of the girls in the bars don’t speak much English. Never the less they are still very friendly and will to try to communicate with you.
In the area you will find pubs and KTV’s bars bunched together. Most places open about 4 or 5pm and close around 2 or 3 am. Happy hours end around 9pm in most of the pubs.
Clubs in the are include 51 Jazzy and Blue Lagoon.
Paramount Shopping Center (PSC) / East Coast Road
If you should find yourself at the beach riding bikes along the shore line or just strolling down the paved walkway don’t worry about the lack of bars in the area. You will see a few places along the pathway that you can stop into and cool off at while grabbing a bit to eat or you can go a few blocks inland and see a lot more on East Coast Road. Like many other area that have a lot of bars you need to stop in and check them to see which is to your liking the best. Many of the clubs have girls in them that you can talk with or sing-a-long with just to mention a few of the things that could happen. Paramount Shopping Center has pubs all on the first floor for your enjoyment. Some of these pub can get petty frisky in the action department so take it from there and have fun.
Duxton Hill area and Neil Road
Located in the Chinatown area many of these clubs are visited by the locals but still pull in a good number of Expats too. You’ll find that in this area there are many girls to join you at your table and have drinks with you and your friends if you chose to have them over. Some clubs have bars have pole dancers to entertain you as well as seeing some bands.
Starting in 2005 this area has come back to life, most of the old pubs have been renamed and are operating at full speed now. Most places open around 4 or 5 with the girls showing up between 6 and 7pm, closing time can range from 1am to 4am. This is definitely a boys place to party, you would not want to take your girlfriend to many of these pubs unless you never plan to return to the area again. There are some place but you need to check out the pubs first to see what is going on there first.
Tangong Pagar / Tras Street / Craig Street / Chinatown / Kampong Bahru Road
Pretty much the same as Duxton Road Area since the two are side by side
Like any place else you have to go in to the clubs to see just what is going on since what happens in one pub my not be the same action as the one right next door. Prices are fairly good during normal hours but happy hour is the best time if you are on a limited budget.
Scattered around Chinatown the clubs can be a bit hard to find but there is a large number being centered in the Duxton Hill area. Lots of KTV pubs fill the Tanjong Pagar area with a few new places opening from time to time. This area also has one of the oldest Legal Red-light Districts (DRL) on Keong Saik Street if that is what you seek.
Central Business District
Location; between Boat Quay / Raffles MRT Station and Chinatown. Several places to have drinks after a days work. Many of these places you have to seek out to find
Far East Square - Located in the CBD this hot spot is best know by the locals and Expats that work in the area or those looking for a fun place to meet people. Many of the clubs attracts workers after the businesses close for the day and offers them a location near by to relax and have dinner and drinks or spend the evening socializing until 2 in the morning. Another area with gourmet dinning restaurants from various kinds of food as well as a food court which are open during the time for your enjoyment.
Chijmes area / Holland Village / Dempesy Road / Sembawang - Yishun / Sentosa – St James Power Station / Serangoon Garden Area
Small area with a lot happening in them. From great place to eat to discos these areas have to be visited to see fully experience them.
Club Descriptions:
One of the great parts of Singapore is that here you can find many different types of clubs to visit. If you find yourself going tired of the same old area to party like at Clarke Quay and you can go for a change of pace in some of the other pubs that are around the city and still have a great time and while you are at it making new friends.
People tend to fall into a certain group and they feel the need to be in with the happening crowd. So depending on how you wish to party your night a way will determine where you chose to spend your money.
This list will help point you in the right direction or at least get you as close as I can.
One thing I found for myself is to never judge a club by the outside, you have to go in and check it out to see what is really going on inside and then decide for yourself. Now you can’t just stick your head in the door and take a look around, go in have a seat order your drink and experience the place and what it has to offer you, then decide if this is your kind of club.
My club description section it will tell you of the various kinds of action in the clubs. For the guys of the world reading this page of course all the clubs are game for you to enter and have a great time. While for the ladies of Singapore, well you may be a bit uncomfortable walking into a club say in Paramount Shopping Center! You are welcome to do it, but to be honest unless you are a very aggressive or an open minded woman I don’t think you’ll get much attention of the guys there sorry to say. But if you are bold enough to go and hang out you will be an added attraction so yes you will turn some heads. (They may think you are with the police too so make it known the best you can that you are not the police)
Cool places to hangout: These are the happening places in Singapore where the Expats / working professionals and senior students go to party mostly. If you want to be seen these are some of the clubs you want to go to visit. Sometimes there is a cover charge which will include your first drink but if you arrive early you will not have to pay but chances are you will be the only one there since you are so early. Places like St James Power Station, Clarke Quay and ZOUK are a good example of Cool Places to hang out at.
Price range: 10 to 14 for beers / Mix drinks 13 to 18
Discotheques: Want to dance the night away to some of the hippest songs played by the best DJ’s here you go! Many are open until 3 or 5 in the morning now and have good crowds from 11 until closing. Most have cover charges which will include your first drink. Arrive early to avoid the line outside about 9pm or 10pm should be good depending on the club and the operating hours. Attica, MOS, Zouk, and Gotham Penthouse are my favorites
Hours of Operation: 8pm to 5am
Price range: 12 to 16 for beers / Mix drinks 13 to 20+ / Cover charges 20 to 30
Karaoke Lounges / Bars: Medium size place - Most places opens around 3 or 4pm daily with happy hours ending between 8 and 9pm. You can either choose to book a room or just seat in the open hall. By 5pm most places will be almost full. For those who do not enjoy listening to others sing and prefer to have a private room. Small room - $120/- (for the room and 4 jugs of beer and fruits/tidbits) You will pay a bit more for the medium and large rooms. Of course, the number of jugs also increases. No ladies’ drinks. Just tip the gal before you leave. Average tip $20/- $30/- depends on how pleased you are with her. The gals will move from room to room most of the time which is called “butterfly”. Only a few could speak English depending on the club you visit. The others either they don’t speak English at all or they are just able to manage a few sentences. Some reserve the gal at their side for the whole duration of their time there and tip them $100/- Whilst others who are richer and very pleased with the gal give $50/- even for a few hours there.
It is a relatively inexpensive place to party.
Most of the Larger KTV lounges have girls from China, Vietnam, Malays and Local Chinese in them pretty much in that order of numbers. So if you don’t speak Chinese well let the operator of the lounge know so they can meet your needs in the way of a singing partner.
Larger Karaoke place - The cost can get very high in these place after happy hours.
Japanese Karaoke: Expensive places, so if you have the cash to spend or have a visitor in town from Japan make them feel at home and take them there it could be just want you need to close that big deal.
Hours of operation: 5pm to 2 or 3am
Price range: 12 to 20 for beers / Mix drinks 15 to 20+
Jazz and Blues: Want to chill out for the night to some smooth Jazz fine one of these clubs and kick back while they jam.
Price range: 10 to 14 for beers / Mix drinks 12 to 18+
Working Girl Clubs: Lonely and need a girl to talk to? Plenty of places to go to find yourself a girl friend that will be more than happy to spend time with you and help you spend your money. Orchard Towers is the best known place in Singapore where you find working girls every night of the week in the bars there. Most of these clubs have girls from countries other than Singapore such as the Philippines, Thailand, Vietnam, Indonesia, Cambodia, Laos, Russia and several other Eastern block Countries.
Some of the clubs will fall into the Buy-me-Drink (B-m-D) in these bar you mostly find Filipina girls working and most of the clubs are located close to each other but there are a few in places you would not think to find them. (you can read about BmD bars under that section)
A word of caution; None of the girls are checked for VD/HIV with that in mind if you should decide to take your found friend out of the club always get your self some protection first.
Hours of operation: 6pm to 2am or 4am
Price range: 10 to 14 for beers / Mix drinks 12 to 18+
(ladies drinks; from 10 tor 30 for beers / Mix drinks 20+ / shoots 10+ / Special drinks sets 50)
Gay Clubs: Singapore has fairly large guy community so there are clubs around that cater to their needs as well. While the list I have is not the complete list it is enough to help those seeking some information. There are big clubs, like the disco’s that will attract guys and do many of the other clubs in Singapore so you never know who you will meet here in Singapore. There are a number of clubs in the Chinatown area that cater to the gay community.
Price range: 10 to 14 for beers / Mix drinks 12 to 18
Areas with a high number of clubs for regular party goers: Clarke Quay, St James Powerstation, Circular Road, Robertson Quay
